Late Spring Events Offer Concert Music, Contemporary Dance and Stand-Up Comedy in Pirkanmaa

Spring is moving along quickly, and there is plenty happening in the Pirkanmaa region! In April, the biennial Tampere Biennale presents new Finnish concert music. In May, the contemporary dance festival Tampere Dance Current invites audiences into the world of dance, while at the same time the Tomatoes! Tomatoes! Stand-up Comedy Festival brings laughter to the city.

Tampere Biennale 15–19 April 2026

Since its founding in 1986, Tampere Biennale has served as a key platform for new Finnish concert music. The theme of its 40th anniversary year, Roots, highlights the voices of composers resident in Finland and the diversity of contemporary music. “Tampere Biennale brings together creators from various generations, cultures and branches of the arts – roots, shoots, saplings,” says the festival’s Artistic Director, Minna Leinonen.

The programme features more than 30 world premieres, a record-breaker for the festival. In total, the festival includes 15 concerts as well as a masterclass and public lecture by international guest composer Agata Zubel, a seminar by the Society of Finnish Composers, and urban art.

On the opening day, 15 April, performers include Earth Ears Ensemble, whose concert exploring the relationship between sound, movement and gesture will feature no fewer than four world premieres. The festival programme also includes the 25th anniversary concert of TampereRaw and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra’s Tampere Biennale 40 Years concert. Younger audiences are invited to enjoy a free Family Day on Sunday, 19 April, at Culture House Laikku.

Tampere Dance Current 19–24 May 2026

Held annually in May, the Tampere Dance Current contemporary dance festival brings together the nation’s top talents and offers an excellent view of the current contemporary dance scene. The 2026 programme has been curated by an artistic team consisting of in-house dancer-choreographers of Dance Theatre MD, festival founder Anniina Kumpuniemi, and Suvi Eloranta, Samuli Roininen and Mari Rosendahl.

Now in its 29th year, the festival programme includes topical contemporary dance performances for adult audiences, dance films, and interactive discussions and workshops. Featured works include Glass Eyes by Mikko Niemistö and his working group; Planets Do Not Lie by choreographer-dancers Jouni Järvenpää and Maija Reeta Raumanni; Dark Dances by choreographer Maija Nurmio; and The Space Between Us Is Not Empty, directed and choreographed by Rūta Ronja Pakalne. Each evening, the Afterheat (Jälkilöylyt) post-show discussions bring audiences and artists together to reflect on the themes and backgrounds of the works.

In addition to stage performances, the festival presents Moving North – Dance Films from the North, a screening curated by Kati Kallio. Films from Pirkanmaa are combined with other Nordic works from the Moving North tour. The festival also hosts the Those Who Become Placed (Paikantujat) workshop for audiences interested in embodiment and urban space in transition.

Tomatoes! Tomatoes! 20–23 May 2026

The Tomatoes! Tomatoes! Stand-up Comedy Festival, held in Tampere from 20 to 23 May, features 13 events and around 60 stand-up comedians. Performers include Anitta Ahonen, Sami Hedberg, Ali Jahangiri, Roosa Maskonen, Jaakko Saariluoma and André Wickström.

New to this year’s programme is Finland’s Funniest Immigrants, a club hosted by comedians with immigrant backgrounds, Mebe and Fabe. Returning audience favourites include Queer Tomatoes, showcasing performers from sexual and gender minorities, and Fresh Tomatoes, highlighting emerging stand-up talent.

After a break of several years, the Vegetable Gala also returns to the programme. At the gala, the audience’s favourite comedian is awarded the title Vegetable of the Year. In addition to comedians, the gala will feature a special musical guest: accordionist and singer Netta Skog.
