The summer festival season in the Tampere Region is entering its final stretch, but the late summer still offers a wide variety of events to enjoy. The turn of July and August is particularly eventful, with three festivals taking place at the same time: world-class piano performances at the Mänttä Music Festival, African music and culture at Fest Afrika in Tampere, and literature taking centre stage at Pentinkulma Literature Festival in Urjala.
The first full week of August is dedicated to the performing arts with Tampere Theatre Festival, while later in the month the city celebrates hip hop culture at Blockfest.
In addition, the exhibitions of Finlayson Art Area remain open until 16 August, and the Mänttä Art Festival exhibitions continue until 31 August.
Mänttä Music Festival 28 July–1 August 2026
The Mänttä Music Festival takes place from 28 July to 1 August in the cultural surroundings of Serlachius in Mänttä. This year’s programme highlights youthful energy, featuring several internationally rising young pianists alongside established masters at the height of their careers.
Making their festival debut are the acclaimed British pianist Steven Osborne, the distinctive French pianist Lucas Debargue, and the poetic virtuoso Aimi Kobayashi. Audience favourites Mariam Batsashvili and Boris Giltburg also return to Mänttä. Among the Finnish performers is Samuel Eriksson, winner of the 2025 Tampere Piano Competition, whose artistic development the festival audience has followed for several years.

Fest Afrika 28 July–2 August 2026
Fest Afrika, Finland’s oldest and largest festival dedicated to African music, spreads across Tampere from 28 July to 2 August to celebrate African culture. This year marks the festival’s 25th anniversary, with a diverse programme including concerts, dance workshops, a film screening and an African market atmosphere.
Performers include Guinean singer Fanta Yayo, Nigerian group El Doxa, Ugandan artist J.C Muyonjo, West African ensemble Trio Mandeng, and East African music and dance group Cheza Ngoma. The music programme also celebrates jazz, featuring the Tanzanian-Finnish afro-jazz ensemble Baraka Issabu Quintet as part of Finland’s Jazz 100 anniversary celebrations.
Free family-friendly events include the festival kick-off at Kaleva Hall’s Centre for Sustainable Living and Culture, an African market event at Nekalab Cultural Centre, and a storytelling session by Yahya Sonko at Tampere Main Library Metso.

Pentinkulma Literature Festival 30 July–2 August 2026
Pentinkulma Literature Festival is a festival that brings together readers, writers and cultural professionals. Held for the 49th time in Urjala, the birthplace of author Väinö Linna, this year’s festival explores stories and storytelling under the theme “Story – Whose Story, and for Whom?”, inviting audiences to examine narrative structures and ask whose stories deserve to be heard.
The programme includes author interviews, with leading Finnish writers Riina Tanskanen, J.P. Laitinen, Niina Repo and Monika Fagerholm appearing at the Book Market on Friday, 31 July. Other highlights include creative writing workshops, poetry performances, the E80 debut author seminar, a dramatised guided tour along the Väinö Linna Trail, and the children’s event Lasten Penttarit.
On Saturday, 1 August, the festival culminates in the Book Celebration (Kirjan juhla), featuring keynote speakers Jaakko Yli-Juonikas, Hanna Meretoja and Tomi Kontio. The closing performance, “True and Becoming Clear” (Tosi ja kirkastuva – singer Marjatta Airas, pianist Petri Herranen, narrator Katri Viitaniemi), combines music and literature, featuring songs composed by Herranen based on poems by Helvi Juvonen, together with selections from Juvonen’s letters and diaries that illuminate the background to her work.

Tampere Theatre Festival 3–9 August 2026
The Tampere Theatre Festival, the largest theatre event in the Nordic countries, brings Finnish and international performing arts to Tampere in August. This year’s main programme features 16 productions, including three international guest performances from Sweden, Norway and Estonia.
The Finnish main programme features guest productions including The Day of Remembrance by the Finnish National Theatre, Forget Me by Svenska Teatern, Arachne by & Espoo Theatre, Jailhouse Rock by Lahti City Theatre, A Disturbance in the Ladscape by Kotka City Theatre, and Alma of Vesisaari by Rovaniemi Theatre. The programme also showcases performances by smaller theatre companies, including the 20th anniversary production of Theatre Siperia, as well as graduation works such as Three Sisters by the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.
The festival’s free street programme features Circus Simon’s To the Circus! and Sara Twister’s Ready. Aim. Fire!, performed at Laikunlava and Väinö Linna Square throughout the festival week. OFF Tampere, the official fringe programme, presents productions by local summer and amateur theatres as well as visiting companies from Imatra, Turku and Helsinki.

Blockfest 21–22 August 2026
Blockfest, the largest hip hop festival in the Nordic countries, once again takes over Ratina Stadium and the Ratinanniemi Event Park in Tampere on 21–22 August. Over the years, the festival has hosted Finnish and international hip hop pioneers, breakthrough artists and globally established stars.
This year’s international headliners include American rappers Future, Tyga, returning to the Blockfest stage, Offset of the legendary group Migos, and one of the hottest names of the new generation, Yeat.
The Finnish line-up features artists such as ibe, Lauri Haav, JVG and Isac Elliot. In addition, Turisti, Finland’s most-streamed artist for two consecutive years, will perform his only concert of the summer at Blockfest.
